Where to begin...
The domain name 'Creaky Stairs' dates it's origins back to a few weeks before it's purchase date of February 23rd, 2001.
As the story goes, I was interested in purchasing a domain name to start practicing website development.
I honestly didn't care about what the domain name would be, but I wanted it to be something interesting and funny that I could relate to.
At this particular time in my life I was really busy trying to master software and other technologies.
As a result, I would often find myself staying up until the wee hours of the morning before slithering into bed.
I would try my best to go upstairs as quietly as possible so I would not wake Angie or Drake (who was only 3 at the time).
But, every nite, like clockwork, I'd step on the 5th step going upstairs and hear CRACK! The whole staircase would "settle" and then creak on several of the other stairs (and still does to this day).
I was always afraid this noise would wake Angie and Drake up (or at least make them stir).
So, sometime in February 2001 I became serious about purchasing a domain. I tried to come up with several names, but most were all taken or just not very intersting.
I was trying to go with a "late night" theme for a name seeing how I was up until about 3:00 most nights... eehhhh mornings.
Then one night it hit me... As it was like daytime outside, and it was after midnight... there was a beautiful full moon.
So, I said, that's it... FullMoon.com. I looked it up, and wouldn't you know it, the domain was available!!!
However, I decided to "sleep on it", and when I looked back 2 or 3 days later to pull the trigger on the purchase, the domain had been purchased.
What luck, huh? Seriously, I missed owning it by that much!
Missing out on that domain really bummed me out because I thought that name summed up what I was going through while trying to learn... up all night with the Full Moon.
It was about a week and many "Cracks" and "Creaks" later that it hit me. One of those nights, The Crack just happened to be at a time when Angie wasn't in a deep sleep and it woke her up.
She was mad at me for coming to bed so late, and I said something like "Those damn creaky stairs".... and then it hit me....
CreakyStairs!
So, I literally got out of bed, looked it up, found it was available, and made the purchase! As it turned out, I really didn't do much with CreakyStairs for many years.
I started developing it sometime in 2007 when we decided to have a Halloween Bonfire. I put together a really basic HTML version of the website.
That version was used for 2007, 2008 and 2009. I really never became a good enough web developer to do anything better with it.
In early 2008 I started working for a company doing development that also included web applications. I was excited to learn this, but never quite had the time to do it as other projects always seemed to get in the way.
As fate would have it, the company ended up shutting down in late 2009. Right before the announcement, I was beginning work on a project that was web based, and I was very excited. So, losing that job was discouraging.
Luckily, I ended up "knowing someone that knew someone" and now find myself working for a web development company in Exeter NH.
So, to help with my desire, I now have the ability to learn more about this technology on a daily basis.
Although I do not consider myself a great web developer yet, at least I now have the ability to make educated decisions about what to do with this site.
As I learn more technologies, I'll incorporate more interactive functionality. For now, September 2010, almost 10 years after purchasing CreakyStaris, I feel as though I can finally say that I've launched a "real" website!
